Welcome Message

Welcome to my science blog.  The intent of this blog is to be used as a tool for students to use for classwork, discussions, and potentially connecting with the community.  You will find a variety of posts here, and I hope that you will find some of the information useful, interesting, and at times even entertaining.

I am the proud father of two young children, and they have reFRAMED my perspective of the world.  Every night we have a ritual of reading before bed time.  While reading these kids books, I have rediscovered the messages some of these great authors have tried to impart to us.  Messages that are more true today than when they first published their stories 20, 30, or more years ago.  Below are some of my favourite quotes that I’d like to share.  I will update more as I find them and time allows.

an excerpt from The Lorax

“But now,” says the Once-ler,
“Now that you’re here,
the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear.
UNLESS someone like you
cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better.
It’s not.

“SO…
Catch!” calls the Once-ler
He lets something fall.
“It’s a Truffula Seed.
It’s the last one of all!
You’re in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds.
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest.  Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax
and all of his friends
may come back.”

– Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

FORGOTTEN LANGUAGE

Once I spoke the language of the flowers,
Once I understood each word the caterpillar said,
Once I smiled in secret at the gossip of the starlings,
And I shared a conversation with the housefly in my bed.

Once I heard and answered all the questions of the crickets,
And joined the crying of each falling dying flake of snow,
Once I spoke the language of the flowers…..

How did it go?
How did it go?

– Shel Silverstein, Where the Sidewalk Ends
